| Working almost exclusively in clay for more than 25 years, Laurie Pollpeter Eskenazi creates the forms by using a combination of wheel throwing and hand building techniques. Texture is applied to the surface by using found objects and handmade stamps. Each piece is painted with multiple glazes and fired several times. Laurie's inspiration comes in many forms: the chaos of tangled roses and twisted vines that inhabit her garden, old crazy quilts, button boxes, tramp art, and vintage textiles. She wonders about their past and the women who used or created them. The bits of antique lace and other oddities found at the flea market are often seen as tools. Through her hands they are given new life and new stories. Characterized by intricate, whimsical designs in lush, vibrant colors, Laurie's work is about pattern, texture and a bit of nostalgia. |
